LANGGUTH: LABELLING TECHNOLOGY

Thanks to the close relationships it enjoys with its customers in the paints and varnishes industry, to the development and testing of new machines based on actual working conditions, and its ongoing research into optimum quality, the innovations by Langguth have already made a great impact among manufacturers in the industry.
With Langguth’s new machines for self-adhesive labels, its tried and tested programme of machines for cold glues and hot melts has been extended in line with the many demands received from customers. "Demand for self-adhesive labels is on the increase among the customers of paint and varnish manufacturers and ‘D-I-Y’ stores, mainly because they look better", says Mr. Rainer Lehmann, managing director at Langguth Gmbh.
Self-adhesive labels adapt very well to surfaces in plastic (PP, PE and PET) and in metal: pails, canisters, tins or tubes.
The labelling machines can also be fitted with a wide range of accessories, such as handle lifting, a container direction device etc.
Naturally, it is also possible to print a variety of texts, such as a batch number or an expiry date.
With the Langguth E36 in line, for example, cylindrical, conical, tapered cone shaped or even square containers can be labelled, with either large format, flat labels or booklet-type labels used to extend the amount of product information provided.
Speed is adjusted according to the size of the containers.
Self-adhesive labels are used exclusively on reels and can also be used to achieve the so-called "NO LABEL LOOK": these labels are used mainly on transparent containers allowing the colour of its contents to be seen.
Transparent labels give the impression that the text has been printed directly onto the container.
Many products are sold every day thanks to the graphic design of their casing; therefore manufacturers aim at product design offering the best possible quality, such as labelling with printing on a transparent background with no visible edges.
This kind of label can also be applied with problem-free, utter precision thanks to Langguth labelling machines.
"The label waits its turn on a vacuum plate. When the container passes in front of the electric eye, the label is called up and is applied precisely. Further down the line, the label is pressed onto the container to prevent air bubbles remaining between the label and the container", explains Mr. Lehmann. Like their labelling machines using cold glue and hot melts, labelling machines for self-adhesive labels are also built and customised according to the customer’s specific demands. The majority of Langguth machines are actually made up of standard parts but are assembled to become a precise match for the specifications required.
Cold glue and hot melt labelling machines used to date for all types of production capacities still have a wide range of possible applications in the paints and varnishes industry, especially when the partners in question are manufacturers, companies specialised in the field of paints or cleaning products. Explosion-proof, electrical machines must be used in the production lines of solvent-based paints and cold glue labelling machines must be used in this case.

One of the benefits of labelling machines that use glue is the speed possible when changing labels: with self-adhesive labels, the whole reel must be replaced, but here new labels must simply be loaded into the labelling machine’s magazine.
The cost of the labels themselves is also lower than self-adhesive labels, as they are normally standard sizes and are thus produced in larger quantities.
With cold glue and hot melt labelling machines it is also possible to insert various types of printers such as inkjet, laser, digital or heat transfer printers. Management of paper or plastic labels to be printed "just in time" is also possible.  Cold glue labelling machines are able to use a wider range of label formats without the need to reset the machine’s configuration. Additional development of the products aiming at improved automation in the paints and varnishes segment led to the production of the V80 - V81 - V82 unstackers.

For the efficient unstacking of 2.5- to 20-litre sized containers (cylindrical, oval, square, in plastic or metal), Langguth has a series of unstackers offering various levels of capacity:
  - V80: capacity up to 40 containers /min.
  - V81: capacity up to 20 containers /min.
  - V82: capacity up to 10 containers /min.

THE V80 UNSTACKER
The piles of containers, stacked with their opening facing the floor, are fed directly from the pallet onto the machine’s conveyor belt. It is not necessary to lift the stack of containers as they are placed at the same height off the floor. The containers are fed along the conveyor belt into the unstacking system where they are separated one by one by a jaw-device, placed with the opening facing upwards and fed on to the next machine. The position of the handle can also be defined to the right or to the left of the container, as required, after unstacking.

THE V81 UNSTACKER
In this case, the piles of containers must be placed manually on the machine’s conveyor belt but again it is not necessary to lift them. This version can accommodate up to 7 piles ahead of the unstacking system.
The pile is brought automatically to the unstacking system where the containers are mechanically centred and separated one by one and placed on the belt by means of the rotating arm so they can be lowered onto the next machine, e.g. a labelling machine. As Mr Lehmann says: "space requirements are at a minimum, we can also exclude the possibility of container damage caused by the mechanical separators as devices with a large surface area are used. We should also take into consideration the fact that the containers are used with their opening facing downwards, thus preventing foreign bodies from entering containers in case of breakages or imprecise placement".
Both models also guarantee full integration with the existing line thanks to their skill at adapting to diverse production demands. Format change is simple and rapid, as it requires the replacement of a few mechanical parts alone.

THE V82 UNSTACKER
With this unstacker module, the piles of containers are inserted manually with their opening facing upwards in the separation segment.
In this case, it is also possible to use several models for a single magazine so that different types of containers can be used with "JUST IN TIME" logic.
"We have just delivered a system composed of V81’s and V82’s to one of the leading manufacturers of plasters and paints in Germany for the unstacking of containers with several formats.
The V82 is used for the main product as it offers greater capacity/speed.
The V81 comes into play should it be necessary to label up a special product in limited numbers, as this calls up each individual container "JUST IN TIME", explains Mr Lehmann.
The containers are separated one by one and lowered to the height of the conveyor belt by means of a pneumatic support plate; they are then pushed forwards onto the belt by a piston, again pneumatic. The containers can even be loaded into the magazine during processing. The range of Langguth products is completed by the D86 closing machine that can be used for all shapes and formats of containers in the 2.5- to 20-litre range, whether in metal or plastic. The containers pass in front of an electric eye on a roller conveyor, the electric eye drops the lid onto the container which was put into the correct position as the opening passed by. The lid receives initial downward pressure and is then closed by a roller system positioned above the container. The capacity of the individual machine is 40 lids/min.

Furthermore, rationalised operation and cost savings are possible thanks to its large storage capacity. This machine also makes it possible to save space as the magazine with the lids is placed above the conveyor belt and is readily integrated into existing production lines.
Langguth has based its company philosophy on satisfying the specific demands of manufacturers of paints and varnishes: flexible labelling machines, customised to meet their specific needs, as with its subsidiary machines, offering technologically innovative solutions.
